Ioannis Spilanis, Regional Economist, Professor of The Department of Environment, Director of the Observatory
Ioannis SPILANIS is economist, graduate of the University of Athens (1979). After postgraduate studies in “European and International Studies” at the University of Grenoble (France), obtained a PhD at the same university on “Tourism and regional development. The Greek case” at 1985. He worked at the Ministry of the Aegean as expert in regional development (1987-1990). He is Professor in the Department of Environment of the Aegean University and teaches in the Graduate Program “Planning, Management and Tourism Policy” in Chios. His research interests are in sustainable development issues focused on islands’ development and tourism planning. As member of the Laboratory of Local and Insular Development, he has participated in many articles, research projects and studies on these topics. Recent studies: “European Islands and Cohesion Policy” (EU/ESPON), «Towards an Observatory and a Quality label of tourism sustainability in the Mediterranean» (UNEP / MAP / Plan Bleu), the “Atlas of Islands” and “Insularity and Sustainability”.
Mr I.Spilanis was General Secretary of Aegean and Island Policy at the Ministry of Marine and Aegean during July 2012 – July 2013.
Eleni Alexiou, MSc “Exercise and Health”
She is a Nutritionist (International Hellenic University of Thessaloniki) with a Certificate in Pedagogic and Teaching Competency (Heraklion Training School). She has successfully completed two postgraduate courses: “Exercise& Health” at the University of Thessaly and “Sports Nutrition” at the University of Aberdeen. Being a lifelong learner, Eleni was recently awarded with a BSc in Journalism and Mass Media Communication (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) while in June (2020), she started her PhD at the Department of Environment (University of Aegean). She has an extensive professional experience in the education sector, whilst she has worked as a research assistant in two EU-Funded projects. She also has a brief work experience in the tourism and hospitality industry as a seasonal employee in Sales, Marketing & Management positions. Her research interests focus on wellness and recreation travelling, outdoor activities and nature-based tourism, sustainable development, and destination management. Currently, she works as a content creator (publishing articles, designing/creating educational and promotional material, photography, copywriting), as in November 2019, she stepped into entrepreneurship, aiming to advocate a more active way of living.
Kyriaki Gliptou, Senior Lecturer at the School Of Events, Tourism And Hospitality Management, Leeds Beckett University
Dr Kyriaki Glyptou joined the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality as Senior Lecturer in October of 2016. She holds the qualification of Environmental Engineer (EUR ING) from Wageningen University in the Netherlands and a PhD on Tourism Destination Management and Regional Development from the Business School of the University of the Aegean in Greece. Kyriaki has gained international exposure as Senior Research Associate of sustainable development projects (UNWTO, UNEP-MAP, EU, SEE and national) as well as through her research, consulting and teaching experience in Italy, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and UK. She is a reviewer for a number of academic journals, member of the International Association for Tourism Economics (IATE) and Fellow of the Institute of Place Management (IPM). Kyriaki’s current research explores strategic destinations’ development and branding in light of sustainability, resilience and uncertainty. She is also interested in the topics of crisis management and the management of environmental resources.
Sofia Karabela, Assistant Professor at the Ionian University
Dr. Sofia Karampela is Assistant Professor (in Tourism Economics) at Ionian University (Corfu), Lecturer (in Agritourism) at Agricultural University of Athens and PostDoc Researcher at University of the Aegean (Mytilene), Greece. She has also worked in the private sector as business consultant, producing financial and regional studies, as well as a researcher in the implementation of projects co-funded by the European Union. Her research interests are focused on local and regional development of islands, networks, tourism planning and sustainability.
Angeliki Mitropoulou, PhD candidate in the Department of Environment at the University of the Aegean
Angeliki Mitropoulou is a PhD candidate in the Department of Environment at the University of the Aegean and in parallel works in a research firm. She also holds Master’s degrees in Human Resource Management and International Relations from Cardiff University of Wales and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Marketing from Athens University of Economics and Business. She often writes articles in various media about issues of social and cultural interest. She has also attended training seminars in creative writing, social media, and photography. Finally, she has previously worked in the private sector in a consulting company and in an advertising-creative office, as well as in the public sector as a scientific consultant mainly regarding issues of island policy, tourism, and culture.
